Adapt & Thrive

Zion’s Diverse Flora

An incredible variety of plants and animals thrive in Zion National Park due to the park’s diversity of habitats. Within Zion, you will find lush riparian ecosystems flanking the Virgin River with mature cottonwood groves and herbaceous plants and grasses. Natural springs seeping out of the canyon walls create hanging gardens and wetlands ripe with ferns, mosses, and wildflowers. Throughout Zion’s lower elevations, desert shrubs, grasses, and cacti use clever adaptations to survive hot, dry conditions. Above the arid grasslands and desert scrub, slow growing, drought-tolerant pinyon-juniper trees cover the hillsides. But look up. High on sandstone ledges, massive ponderosa pines grow right out of the rocks, pushing their powerful roots into the soft Navajo sandstone. Higher still, on the park’s plateaus, ponderosa pines mix with Douglas fir, white pines, and aspen groves.

A Wild Place

Wildlife in Zion

Zion’s rich variety of plants support an equally diverse abundance of wildlife, including 78 species of mammals, 291 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 8 types of fish, along with many varieties of insects and arachnids. During your visit, you may spy rock squirrels scurrying over boulders, mule deer grazing on the banks of the river, or California condors soaring overhead. At night, listen for the call of coyotes. If you are lucky, you may see a fox slipping off to hunt or a ringtail cat scampering up a ponderosa tree. Larger predators, including mountain lions, also live in the area. As with all wildlife, please take proper safety precautions and keep your distance.
